Sherry FitzGerald Estate Agents are bringing to market Kilmurry House, the birthplace of Irish watercolourist Mildred Anne Butler, one of the finest country mansions in all of Ireland.

The Georgian house, executed in a timeless Palladian style, was Butler’s lifelong home. His old orangery was his studio; its walled gardens, lake and woods provided the backdrop for many of his finest outdoor pastoral and animal paintings.

Appointed to the Royal Academy in 1893, Butler painted with international acclaim for over 30 years.

The National Gallery of Ireland has purchased seven of his watercolors for its permanent collection. A watercolor of a pair of towers was commissioned for the library at Queen Mary’s Dolls House.

His legacy remains at Kilmurry House, where some of his Kilmurry landscapes hang in the house’s art gallery, painted from an adjoining window facing the picturesque park.

The large house itself, set in over 90 acres of private estate in Thomastown, County Kilkenny, dates from 1690.

Butler’s father, Captain Henry Butler, grandson of the 11th Viscount Mountgarret, bought Kilmurry House in the late 1800s, and it remained in the Butler family until 1981.

The latest restoration by the current owners has extended the house to approx. 17,861 square feet with 11 bedrooms and eight bathrooms while maintaining the order and symmetry of the original Georgian design.

Kilmurry House is an elegant five-bay, three-storey limestone structure above a garden-level villa. What is most remarkable about the house is the amount of natural light, rare in historic homes.

Here, glass doors and double-height windows bring in light and views. The reception rooms are generously proportioned and adorned with original details, such as ornately carved mantelpieces and crown moldings.

Carefully selected limestone and reclaimed American pine replicate the original floors, and bespoke furnishings echo the period character of each room.

Kilmurry House is a luxurious 21st century family home, with plenty of space for relaxation, leisure and entertainment.

The grounds of Kilmurry are a sanctuary for nature lovers offering ultimately peace and privacy in an idyllic rural setting.

The owners have applied the same high standards in interior restoration to the exterior, extending the grounds of the estate to over 90 acres.

Lawned gardens, with space for a helipad, adorn the front and rear of the house. The resplendent two-acre walled garden is quintessentially Georgian in its scale and symmetry.

The grounds of Kilmurry are a sanctuary for nature lovers offering ultimately peace and privacy in an idyllic rural setting.

The courtyard cottage with its own kitchen and lounge could be used as staff accommodation, as could the original two-bedroom gatehouse with its modern kitchen and bathroom.

Beyond the gardens is a serene lake surrounded by mature woodland – a habitat for red squirrels, hares, hedgehogs, foxes, pheasants, otters and a pair of nesting eagles.

Other delights are the children’s adventure course and the zip line through the woods. The remaining area is made up of paddocks and wooded pasture for horses and cattle.
