Mophie portable magnetic mount review: A MagSafe solution with a premium price tag

Mophie’s new portable magnetic mount is a well-designed piece of kit that works with Apple’s MagSafe. However, the lack of charge makes it difficult to recommend to the daily user.
Launched alongside the more capable Mophie 3-in-1 Travel Charger, the portable magnetic mount has a singular use. Namely, cradling your phone while on the go.
Premium soft-touch fabric wraps around the device. It looks like velvet but has a mottled, woven look. A small leatherette Mophie logo is sewn on top, only branding on the outside.
For the interior, Mophie replaced the soft-touch fabric with a plain gray material that has the slightest shimmer.
Mophie appears to have cut the fabric or finished the edge of the fabric with heat, leaving a somewhat rough edge. It opposes the soft feel of the exterior although it may wear down with use.
Design and use
It unfolds, with one half serving as the base while the top half articulates with a built-in magnetic stand. Then any MagSafe compatible iPhone can connect. As it stands, all iPhone 12 and iPhone 13 models include support for MagSafe.
If you have an older iPhone but to like Mophie’s mount, the company offers magnetic rings that you can place retroactively.
The magnetic puck has a rubberized face with plastic around the edge. The magnet feels surprisingly thick, although we suspect it may match the thickness of the bottom hinge more than out of necessity. When closed, the top and bottom layers are parallel, separated by the hinge and the magnet.
Both hinges are metal, with the bottom one exposed. The bottom hinge is a round tube made of what looks like anodized aluminum and matches the color of the fabric well.
Mophie nailed the tension on those two hinges. They are strong and easily support the weight of your phone. Even the huge iPhone 13 Pro Max.
At the same time, they can move easily. They’re as smooth and strong as those on our MacBook Pro.
When the holder is closed, the magnetic pad attracts a metal plate embedded in the bottom of the holder. This helps keep it closed in your bag and provides a satisfying click when you close it.
Despite the solidity of the kickstand, there is still play. It tends to bounce around if you try to use your phone while on the stand. A short tap will cause 3-5 seconds of bounce as your phone returns to idle.
Too many bounces gets boring, and the bounces seem to get bigger with each subsequent press. You also tap in the wrong place if the phone moves under you.
It’s probably a lot of comments about a minor issue, because it’s not that hard to pick up the phone when you need it.
There’s no orientation on the MagSafe mounts, which means your phone can be placed at any angle. Rotate it horizontally or keep it vertical.
Watching Apple Fitness+ or a movie is great in landscape mode, but scrolling through Tiktok or taking a FaceTime works best in portrait.
Should You Buy the Mophie Portable Magnetic Holder?
The catch here is the price. At $40, we’d easily classify it as a premium accessory. However, other options are available to get the job done more cheaply, even with MagSafe.
We reviewed the Moft wallet which connects via MagSafe, holds a few cards, and can double as a portable stand. It’s cheaper, smaller and more functional.
Recently we also reviewed the Speck Presidio Folio which integrates your existing MagSafe puck into a portable case that can charge your iPhone, manage your cable, support multiple orientations, and is more stable. However, this price is higher because you need both components.
The thing is, there are a lot of options out there. Mophie has created a fantastic accessory that we are happy to add to our gear bag. It is without a doubt the most beautiful option among the many we have reviewed.
With its availability in Apple Stores, it is sure to attract a lot of attention. We wish it could charge. We’d be all-in if there was a $50 version with a detachable USB-C cable for charging. But $40 for just a stand is a tougher sell.
If you’re okay with the price, we’re sure you’ll love the Mophie portable magnetic stand.
