This Father’s Day weekend, if you miss it, Dr. Wine on rue d’Alger, “Back-well” should be your destination for a sumptuous feast of Gallic flavors. Whenever my late mother landed in Paris, one of the very first things she did was look for a restaurant or brasserie serving the two-tiered seafood platter. And I’m happy to report that Dr. Wine offers this same dish, with specially imported seafood to guarantee freshness, and certainly not frozen.

The queen’s platter serves two and is priced at P 2,899; while Dr. King’s platter serves four and priced at £ 4,899. What you get are crabs, shrimp, razor clams (or what clams are in season), oysters, and salmon rillettes. If that doesn’t bring back taste memories from your last trip to France, consider yourself in a coma.

Dr. Wine is also proud of its take out menu. You pre-order, it’s good for four to six people, and you can enjoy the dishes safely at home. There’s the yellow French chicken, a lamb thigh dish, a US Ribeye option, and there’s one that I found particularly interesting, as it’s a very French dish that you usually don’t find in restaurants. local restaurants claiming a French origin.

Seafood at Dr. Wine

It would be the Koulibiac with salmon and sea bass (Wellington style). And when it says Wellington style, you’ll have to think of Beef Wellington, something I’m always on the lookout for when browsing a menu. It would be the seafood version, and it’s sea bass, salmon, mushroom duxelles, hard-boiled eggs, saffron rice, and spinach – all in puff pastry. The photo alone, of the Koulibiac, made me wish it was in front of me, and my dinner that night. It looked so appetizing.

The wonderful thing about Dr. Wine is the very laid back and relaxed atmosphere. These are good quality French food and wine, but not served in a sultry and formal way. This is reality in a Metro Manila setting, and you will be happy to be in a “Vive la France” state of mind.
